About Us

History (back to top)

The Newton Fire/EMS Department officially started service in January, 1997. This new department was the result of the merger of the Newton Fire Department and the Newton Ambulance Department. In 1997 the Fire Department had completed 100 proud years as a paid department and was recognized as an excellent department. The Ambulance Department had completed 27 proud years as a separate EMS service, and also had a fine reputation--including being the first EMS service in the state to provide paramedic level care. Since the two departments had always worked together before 1997, the city commissioners thought it logical to combine the departments into one. The Fire/EMS Department has continued to build on the fine traditions that both previous departments had. WE DO IT ALL--WE DO IT WELL.

Operations (back to top)

The Fire/EMS Department currently has 42 full time employees and 1 active reserve. The line personnel are divided into three shifts that work a 24 on and 48 off rotation. The Department provides fire service to the cities of Newton and North Newton, and also to the townships of Newton, Macon, and Darlington. EMS and rescue service is provided to these same areas and also to most of the eastern half of Harvey County.
